During the rut a buck’s hormone level is elevated and he has mating on his mind. He’s actively seeking, chasing and breeding receptive does. But bucks are also defending their territory from other bucks seeking to mate with “their” does. It’s a male thing: sex and violence. They are either lovers or fighters depending upon who they meet in the woods.
But for deer hunters hunting the rut, the only thing they have on their minds is “how do I get a shot opportunity?”

"When the buck stops - take the shot!"
When hunting the rut, try using a TailTRICK doe decoy with a swishing tail. The swishing tail says “Hey baby, come a little closer” and bucks in the rut do. When the buck comes closer looking for a good time he’ll give you a shot opportunity that you might not have had without the help of a decoy.
You’ve heard of a “street walker”, well a TailTRICK doe decoy with a swishing tail is sort of a “woods walker”. Every buck wants to take a better look once he’s seen the decoy. For the deer hunter hunting the rut it’s a game of luring the buck closer, creating a shot opportunity and holding the deer for a shot. Sounds a little bit like entrapment. Hmm!

Field Notes: aggressive posture, fighting a sapling, at PSB
Some bucks are looking for love and other bucks are looking for a fight. A strategically placed TailTRICK buck decoy will often attract dominant bucks and provoke them to displays of aggression. These bucks will move closer and threaten the other buck (decoy) by: bristling up their hair, laying their ears back, stomping their feet or maybe sidling up to the decoy. As the dominant buck moves closer to the intruder (buck decoy) shot opportunities are created. While the buck is distracted the hunter has more freedom to move and take the shot.
In order to maximize the possibility of taking a trophy buck while hunting the rut use a TailTRICK buck and doe decoy setup. Place the buck decoy near the rear of the doe decoy and it appears that a buck is tending a doe. This setup appeals to both lovers and fighters. Older more mature bucks will move closer to size up the situation and opportunities. When they move in or even circle the decoy setup they will often stop. When the buck stops – take the shot!
